Journal belonging to Clarence Brown of Toledo, Ohio who was nominated for city solicitor at the 1880 Greenback National City Convention

8 x 7", marbled boards and page edges, red leather spine and corners, cover label "Excelsior Journal 1879", unpaginated. Covers worn and rubbed, especially extremities, waterstaining to endpapers and last few pp, "title page" missing small piece, occasional tears, a few pages neatly removed else good condition. Approximately 50-60 pages filled in, some very brief, some lengthy. Clarence Brown's name does not appear in the journal but the notes ie. being nominated, winning, etc. give clues to the writer. The information is mainly early 1880s, he covers up some of the "79" (1879). He notes that Jacob Romeis was nominated at the same convention for the position of mayor, both won their elections. Some of the contents: Brown resigns as councilman for the 2nd ward (due to his win), pleased with the election of the City Hall ticket except for the police chief who was on the Democratic ticket, probate court appearances, contested elections, newspaper clippings (pasted in) that list court dockets (ie. Judge Lockwood and the cases he was to hear) and so on. At the back are expenditures: sewer connections, paving/grading/widening roads. Some of the last names: Navarre, Camberlin, Nisbit, Seiffert, Commager, Hamilton, Merrill. Sold as is.
