Frederick Rounsville Payne, son of Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Nott Payne of Elmira, New York Joined the U.S. Naval Academy in 1888 at the age of 16. He participated in many battles including the Brazilian Revolution, The Philippine Insurrection and The Santo Domingo Revolution, receiving medals and commendations. He retired in 1910 due to a physical disability in the line of duty as a Lieutenant Commander. His son, Major Frederick Rounsville Payne, Jr. was a WWII ace, he shot down six Japanese planes during the Battle of Guadalcanal. Like his father he was awarded medals for his service ie. Navy Cross, Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross. He retired in 1958 with the rank of Brigadier General, USMC and died in 2015 at the age of 104. COMES WITH: Cabinet card photo "B.N. Payne's Family Sept 5, 1891", M.C. Rowley Photographer, Elmira. Light wear and soiling else very good condition. Shows Fred Sr. (not in uniform) with his parents, sister and four brothers. Sold as a lot.
