G. Paul Bishop: Berkeley, 1954. Paperback. Very Good. Item #99-8828

Black and white, 9.25 x 7.5", tipped to an illustration board 10 x 8", signed in pencil in lower right corner and dated "'54", subject's name in pencil on lower left corner. This is listed as Theodor Reik No. 1 on the Bishop website. Image is very good, board is toned and has faint stain at the lower edge. The back of both the portrait and the image are stamped G. Paul Bishop" with his address in Berkeley, California and "This photograph is released for publication..." Photo shows Dr. Reik staring out, making eye contact with the viewer. Dr. Theodor Reik, 1888-1969, met Dr. Freud in 1910 at the University of Vienna and became his student, protégé and lifelong friend. Reik practiced in Vienna until 1928 when he moved to Berlin, leaving there in 1938 to escape the Nazi persecution. He was the pioneer of lay analysis in the United States. G. Paul Bishop, 1915-1998, was a well known photographer who took photos of many well known individuals in various fields. Some of his subjects: Maya Angelou, Imogen Cunningham, Robert Frost, Aldous Huxley, Dr. Alfred Kinsey, Robert Lowell, Odetta, Dr. Linus Pauling, Edward Weston, Frank Lloyd Wright. An interesting image by a talented photographer.
