A collection of negatives and original photographs relating to Gar Wood and the Harmsworth Trophy Race of 1932

np (Detroit/Grosse Pointe), September 1932. Item #99-8227

No photographer listed but most likely it is the work of C.E. (Chester Earle) Wagner, these images were found with unrelated photos that bore his name. Nineteen negatives 3 x 4", twenty photos: 8 x 10" (8 including 1 duplicate), 1.75 x 4" to 3.5 x 5" (12). The negatives all have a pinhole in a corner (or tip of a corner missing), larger photos have light curling, soiling and edge wear, a few of the smaller ones have either light soiling or creased corners, one has a rough edge. Overall, very good condition. All were stored in two envelopes, 7.5 x 5.5" with pencil note "Boat racing Gar Wood Sept. 1932" and 10 x 8.5", torn, pencil note on one side "Boat photos Gar-Wood" and on reverse "Packard Motor". Negatives include Miss England III, people on a dock watching the race, man wearing a Miss America Jacket, a different man signing an autograph, Grosse Pointe Yacht Club, Gar Wood appears in the background of some of the images. The 8 x 10" views show what appears to be Miss America X, by herself, speeding. Gar Wood is seen clearly in one of the smaller photos talking to another man, the rest of the smaller ones show two men in an unnamed speed boat with a pennant with the letter "P" on what looks to be the Detroit River, the images are at a distance so hard to tell who the men are. COMES WITH: Gar Wood plaque "Greetings Gar Wood Wood Hydraulic Hoist & Body Co. Miss America X Worlds Fastest Boat 124.91 M.P.H." Stamped lightweight bronze colored metal with metal back support, front good, back is pitted. Shows Miss America X riding the waves. AND Barret, J. Lee's "Speed Boat Kings, 25 Years Of International Speedboating" published by Arnold-Powers: Detroit 1939. Book has photos, 9 x 6", two-tone cloth, 143pp with index, extremities bumped and worn, covers a little rubbed, hinges loose, contents very good. Deluxe edition, limited to 200 numbered copies, this is #154. The 1932 Harmsworth Trophy Race was held in September 1932 at the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club on Lake St. Clair in Michigan.
