Frontis, 6 x 3.5", blue marbled paper over boards, leather spine, raised bands, 124pp + ads. Disbound, covers taped on with cello tape, lacks? free endpapers, frontis pasted to inside front cover and lacks tip of a corner, first signature detached, scattered light foxing, ad page becoming detached, text block tight and very good. Someone has written, in a contemporary hand, "Princess Royal" in ink on the title page. Dedication page has the printed "signature" of "S___ S___" which is the pseudonym of Mary Ann Kilner (1783-1831). She and her sister-in-law Dorothy Kilner were two of the pre-eminent children's writers of the 1780s and beyond according to the Hockliffe Project. The advertisement page at the back of this book lists 19 books available from the publisher, six of which were written by Mary Ann and thirteen by Dorothy. Mary Ann was less prolific, only seven books are attributed to her, Dorothy wrote twenty-six. Any edition of this book is SCARCE especially in the first edition. Later editions were in two volumes. Not in L.C. or O.C.L.C. FIRST EDITION.
