Two general store ledgers belonging to W. Veith, Oscoda Michigan 1887-1888

Oscoda, January 1, 1887. Item #99-7049

12.5 x 8", marbled boards, red cloth spines, 94 and 112pp. Covers and extremities worn, spine peeling, inner hinges cracked, ink light, a few pages neatly removed, scattered spotting, soiling and staining. Ledgers are not filled in completely, one has only 30 pages filled in the other 59. Written inside each book below Veith's name and written in what appears to be a different hand- "Box 109, Mich. Sacred Heart School Au Sable, Mich." Some of the items bought and sold: butter, oranges, pork, sugar, tea, mocha coffee, 3 dozen hoop skirts, 60 pairs of shoes, 40 loaves of bread, French bedstead, mahogany bureau, Gothic bookcase, ottomans, boots, various fabrics. Some of the names: Richmond & Kingman, Dunham & Brokaw, Springer & Whiteman, Star Barnham & Seeley, Duell, Fitch, Betts, Crocker, Willson, Steamship Troy. Veith bought lumber from Robert Coons & Henry P. Smith, paid John R. Penn for real estate investments. Recorded in one ledger: "William Jones and Thomas Mason enter into co-partnership this day as Dealers in Furniture and Cabinet ware under the firm title of Jones and Mason...". One ledger lists transactions separately for AuSable customers and for Oscoda customers. January 1, 1887 to February 28, 1878 and January 1, 1887 to February 19, 1888. SCARCE. Sold as a pair only.
