Drawn and engraved by J.T. Hammond. Fold-out hand-colored map 21.5 x 17" in blindstamped green leather covers 5.5 x 3.25", gilt lettering on front cover. Includes fold-out guide "TRAVELLER'S GUIDE AND EMIGRANT'S DIRECTORY, THROUGH THE STATES OF OHIO, ILLINOIS, AND MICHIGAN." Phelps & Squire: New York 1836. 18 x 22". Covers well worn and rubbed, small tears to spine, gilt lettering rubbed but still bright and sharp, map has separated along folds and is in pieces, cello tape repairs/marks/stains, some chipping and edge tears else very bright, sharp and beautiful. The guide is toned, splitting along folds, cello tape repairs/marks/stains. Both map and guide are still attached to pastedowns. The guide gives a history of each state and its population, prices of passage from the city of New York to various other cities ie. it would cost $9.50 by barge or $19.00 by steamboat to travel to Detroit. Michigan's population in 1836 was 31,639 which included 31,346 whites, 261 free colored and 32 slaves. The map of Michigan shows "Michillimakinac" near the Cheboygan River, several miles south of its actual location. Map also shows Missouri and the Territory of Wisconsin. Originally published in 1836, it is very SCARCE in any condition. Streeter 7194. Sold as is.
