Cancelled five dollar scrip from the Pennsylvania Mining Company of Michigan and made payable to "Saml W Hill agt."

Oblong, 3 X 7.25, black on cream background, vignette shows a sailing vessel inside an oval which surmounted by an eagle with a horse on either side, orange 2-cent revenue stamp. Cancellation marks, unevenly trimmed, lacks lower righ corner, light creasing else good. Samuel "Sam" W. Hill was a surveyor who worked with Douglas Houghton in surveying the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and managed the interests of many mining companies; additionally, he was a member of the Michigan House of Representatives. Hill achieved legendary status for his colorful use of profanity which resulted in the expression "What in Sam Hill!" Scrip is made payable to the cashier Morton McMichael Jr., a prominent Philadelphia banker and son of the future mayor of Philadelphia, Morton McMichael. Signed also by Joseph G. Henszey as president and S.M. Day as treasurer.
