np (Detroit?), nd (c 1920s?). Item #98-4655
8 x 10 black and white studio portrait of Oldfield by Witzel showing and almost-smiling Oldfield posing with a cigar in his left hand, photo is glazed and in a wooden frame, nice condition, not examined out of frame, with framer's label "J.W.Hughes" of Detroit. INSCRIBED IN WHITE INK "To Carney -- Labadie Co / Hello Boys / You know me" AND SIGNED BY BARNEY OLDFIELD. Carney-Labadie was a Detroit tire store in the early part of the 20th Century; by about 1920 or so they built their new headquarters at 5911 Cass (now housing our Big Book Store). We found a notice in an old Michigan trade magazine online from 1922 announcing that Carney-Labadie had been named the Detroit distributor of Oldfield's Firestone tire line.
