Black and white illustrations with front covers in color, 9 x 6, pict staples wraps, unpag. Items are stored in/come with a double slipcase of green cloth, outer slipcase has a red leather label with gilt lettering. Overall condition: chipping, creasing, soiling and toning, bookplates, tiny tears. The front side edge of Cock Robin is frayed and appears to be a paper defect; rear upper corner of First Trousers is lacking; small tear/hole on first page of Fox’s Story; rear cover of Merry Mice has a 1.75 horizontal tear. Else very good. Slipcases have light wear, small bit of fraying on outer corners, one bottom edge has a small snag/tear, light rubbing, spine label chipped and starting to peel, outer slipcase is darker than inner slipcase else very good. Bookplates have a Brownie illustr, and bear the name of Mildred Greenhill, wife of well-known Chicago book collector, Harold Greenhill. Covers are bright, sharp and very attractive. All are listed in the NUC and Baumgarten except for the Monkey’s Trick and except for Cock Robin and Jack the Giant are listed in Baumgarten. There are no advertisements in any of these titles. There are printing date discrepancies between the NUC and Baumgarten regarding Bonny Birds and Merry Mice. The printed dates on our copies are each 1897 but the NUC indicates 1896 for Bonny Birds and Baumgarten has 1897. For Merry Mice the NUC has 1897 and Baumgarten 1896. Also, both list 1896 as the first printing date for Funny Foxes, our copy is 1897. No verification of date in the NUC or Baumgarten for The Monkey’s trick so six titles appear to be first editions, and the other four--? Extremely scarce, especially to have so many in this condition.
