Composition Book from 1912 and belonging to Angela Elias and mainly fillled with inspirational quotes from famous authors but there are five pages of original art work / character sketches.

np, January 1912. Item #98-3796

Ink and pencil sketches, 8.5 x 6, unpag (110 lined pages, 58 are filled in). Covers fair, spine chewed up, waterstaining, soiling, smudging, one page neatly clipped out, loose in covers. Titled "Thought Cabinet," Elias has written down excerpts from favorite authors/poets such as Pope, Emerson, Beecher, John Stuart Mill; comments on books she has read i.e., Mill on the Floss. The highlight of this "book" are her charming, professional looking drawings. The centerfold shows a stairway that goes across both pages and a puppy, a baby and a mini soldier with a sword. On the lower left corner is a bulldog and the lower right corner is a dog called Spot, done in watercolors (the only one) and is trying to flee a bee on his tail, caption reads "If you are on a good thing, stick to it." Other sketches show an 18th c. style man sitting reading a book with a cat perched on top of his shoes; a bee; a mouse on book, a bald chicken with a caption "It’s better to be a live scrub than a dead thoroughbred"; a comic strip with stick figures that fills an entire page and contains some political humor. A talented artist and unfortunately we weren’t able to find any information on her.
