Mounted black & white photograph showing extras from the movie "Farewell to Manzanar."

np (Manzanar), nd (1976). Item #98-1782

Photo is 4.25 x 6, mat is 6.75 x 8. Photo has light wear/scratches, mount has light soiling and is roughly trimmed, on the reverse in red pencil is the previous owner's name and address along with these notes: "extras posing as prisoners in Japanese concentration camp at Manzanar in movie," "Donna and Janet," "Farewell to Manzanar KSAN photo contest." The movie was based on the book by Jeanne Wakatuski Houston (a Manzanar survivor) and her husband James D. Houston. The film shows the experiences of the Wakatuski family in Manzanar and their life afterward. Manzanar was the one square mile camp, opened in 1942 in response to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. More than 11,000 Americans of Japanese ancestry and their immigrant parents were forced to occupy Manzanar and other camps for the duration of the war. The photo resembles an actual 1940s era photo.
