THE WORKS OF WILLLIAM HOGARTH (Including the "Analysis of Beauty") Elucidated by Descriptions, Critical, Moral, and Historical; . . . To Which is Prefixed Some Account of His Life. In two volumes.

Printed for R. Scholey by James Ballantyne and Co: Edinburgh: London, 1812. Item #98-0545

Eighty nine plates including both frontis, half leather, blindstamped with gilt decoration and lettering, marbled boards and endpapers, 203, 96 + "Analysis of Beauty". Covers worn, rubbed, soiled, shelfworn, corners and spine tips bumped and worn, leather scuffed, spine covers have several small cracks in the leather, inner hinges cracked, front cover loose on volume 1 and rear cover loose on volume 2, ink names, staining, soiling, scattered spotting, light creasing, one page lacking tip of corner in volume 1, volume 2 has tears, worming and a page that is almost detached, also in volume 2 plate VIII is mislabeled as plate VII. Except for the frontis, the plates are numbered I-LXXXIX with the plates being given a separate numbering system of Roman numerals within each "chapter." There is no plate LXXXIV but every "chapter" has all the plates called for so it appears to be another instance of misnumbering since our count of 89 plates matches that of The National Union Catalog. In spite of the above description it is still an attractive set. Sold as is. Second edition.
