Two Dollar Detroit City Bank Note Signed.

Detroit, Jan. 20, 1837. Item #97-0824

7.75 x 3, finely engraved two dollar bank note, drawn in the Detroit City Bank. Reads "Will pay Two Dollars on demand to E. Farnsworth (?) or Bearer." Cancellation hole, well worn, creased, some of the handwriting is faded, tears, small pieces missing along edges, staining and spotting. Note has a lovely central vignette of the city and its waterfront with two smaller vignettes of sailing vessels. The Detroit City Bank was organized in December of 1837 with offices on Jefferson Avenue. The bank started off well but soon overextended itself and finally closed in February of 1839. This bank note was dated seven days before the territory of Michigan was granted statehood.
