VELLUM INDENTURE

Philadelphia, PA, 1814. Paperback. Very Good. Item #23-0956

One page, vellum, 25 x 18”, folded into eight parts. Indenture is between master builders Samuel Griscom and Joseph Zebley, document is signed by them as well as witnesses. Several wax seals placed throughout, pencil writing on front fold, some staining and wear, two small blue x marks (crayon?) not affecting text. Document is overall readable and nice, written with beautiful calligraphy. Carpenter Joseph Zebley was a member of the historic Carpenters’ Company of Philadelphia, and Samuel Griscom was a brick mason who later became a civil engineer and manager of the Schuylkill Canal and was the nephew of Betsy Ross!
