The Andrea Doria was an Italian luxury transatlantic ocean liner that operated from 1953 until its sinking in 1956. At its advent, Andrea Doria was known to be Italy’s largest, fastest, and supposedly safest ship. In July 1956, the New York bound vessel was traveling in heavy fog when it struck the eastbound passenger line Stockholm of the Swedish American Line. There were 46 fatalities; the accident remains the worst maritime disaster to occur in United States waters since the capsizing of the Eastland at Chicago in 1915. A very attractive piece.
