Autograph book inscribed and signed by Yale faculty and graduating class of 1851. Beautiful frontis by D.C. Hinman (New Haven, From The South East), many engraved portraits of faculty members. 5.75 x 8.25”, unpaginated, gilt-ruled leather boards, AEG. Covers are worn with some scratches on back cover, extremities bumped and chipping, hinges cracked, bottom piece of spine loose but attached, bookplate of former owner, pencil and ink writing of former owners on first few endpapers, foxing and offsetting to contents else good. Blank pp at last part of book filled with “yearbook” inscriptions to James Spencer of LaFayette, Iowa. BOUND WITH: CATALOGUE OF THE OFFICERS AND STUDENTS IN YALE COLLEGE 1850-51, 48pp at back of book. One notable signer was J. Walker Fearn, a member of the Civil War Confederate Diplomatic Corps and later the American minister to Serbia, Romania, and Greece (1885-1889). He also served as chief of the Department of Foreign Affairs for the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893.
