Two sheets: 8 x 6.75", 12.5 x 7.75", written on both sides. Fragile, staining, creasing, chipping and edge tears, larger paper is almost in four pieces. Handwriting very legible. The smaller sheet lists a handful of "members honoraires" along with the name of the unit, etc. The other sheet "Liste du Membres de la Compagnie au 1st April[sic- not Avril] 1862. Liste du Membres Honoraires". There are 83 names listed including J. Roux, Ant. Terrari, J. Pujol, J.M. Couteille, E Talon. Were the names written by Capt. St. Martin? The Compagnie Francaise was founded in Baton Rouge in 1861. It was part of the European Brigade which was comprised of various units of European citizens such as France, Spain and Italy. Comes with: Five documents related to (Jules) Rene Saint Martin (St. Martin), a relative of Captain A. St. Martin. Rene St. Martin was born in 1849 in Wheeling, Virginia, attended the Academie Francaise in Paris and acquired three degrees 1868-1872, the last one being for law, was a French politician and teacher, married in 1885, had a daughter Marcelle in 1898, died in 1932 (Paris?). There are five documents, soiled and creased, three are his diplomas (with seals) from Academie de Francais, the other is his daughter's official birth certificate. Plus, a typed letter from 1966 addressed to his daughter Marcelle in California from a St. Martin relative in England, giving her brief information on her father's education and marriage dates. An interesting collecting. Very SCARCE handwritten contemporary Confederate rosters. A total of seven pieces, sold as a lot.
