Elaborate woodcut borders on each of the three title pages with individual engraved portraits of the monarchs on the reverse (1 per title), woodcut headpieces, recent full dark calf using original (slightly worn and scratched) front cover, raised bands, red morocco label, (xiv), 342 including errata. Preliminary leaves remargined (mostly quite minor restoration at corners, but general title with larger portion of corners restored and with slight loss of border decoration), a few leaves with one or two brown spots (apparently from wax, in two cases with trivial loss). Occasional light dampstaining or smudging, two leaves with scarcely noticeable artful modern mends. The historian and prelate, Francis Godwin (1562-1633) held several positions in the Church of England and first came to prominence when he published his "Catalogue of the Bishops of England" in 1601. The present work, published in Latin in 1616 and again in 1628, secured for him the see of Hereford. First edition in English. SCARCE.
