7.5 x 5", 3/4 dark red calf, spine richly tooled, marbled boards and endpapers, teg, 209pp. Light sunning to spine and adjoining leather panels, edgewear, inner hinges cracked, ffep and the next two blank pages almost detached, small tear on title page, scattered foxing else good to very good condition. The author (James S. French per Howes) writes about backwoodsmen (meaning Crockett and others) "...my observation induces me to believe that their most striking feature is the fact that they clothe the most extravagant ideas in the simplest language and amuse us by their quaintness of expression..." A spurious biography, first printed in Cincinnati in 1833 and reprinted many times. The popularity of "Sketches" forced Crockett to issue an authorized biography in 1834. This is a "New Edition"
