Detroit, nd. Hardcover. Very Good. Item #22-3593

Red clay brick, 8 x 4 x 2", death certificate copy is 8.5 x 11" on copier paper, statement oblong 8.5 x 11". On October 22, 1926 Houdini was in his dressing room at the Princess Theatre in Montreal prior to a performance. A young man stopped by and asked if he could punch him (Houdini bragged about his ability to withstand punches to his stomach) so of course he consented. Unfortunately, Houdini wasn't able to tense his body in time, resulting in severe internal injuries. Two days he boarded a train, in great pain, for a performance at Detroit's Garrick Theatre. Houdini was in intense pain while giving what was to be his final performance ever on October 26th. He collapsed after the curtain dropped and was taken to Grace Hospital where he was diagnosed with peritonitis. His condition worsened and he died on October 31st in Room 401, Corridor D, John R. wing. Two of the three buildings associated with Houdini on his last tour were the Statler Hotel where he stayed and Grace Hospital have both been demolished. The third building, the former William R. Hamilton funeral home on Cass Avenue where his body was taken is still there but has been empty for decades. The statement of authenticity reads in part "...Personally selected this brick from the debris left by the workmen who tore down old Grace Hospital...in 1979". The person who rescued the brick was an amatuer magician. This brick came from Grace Hospital but we cannot guarantee that this brick was anywhere near Houdini's death bed. A total of three items, sold as a lot only.
