Engraved portraits of some of the contributors, 10 x 6.5", half leather, raised bands, gilt lettering, 908pp + ads. Covers very well worn, outer hinges cracked, spine missing pieces, ink names (R.L. Meriwether 1923; Fremont P. Wirth, Peabody College, Nov. 16 1927; Charles Manly), foxing, light waterstaining, occasional pencil marks, lower corner lacking pages 891-900 else very good condition. Binding tight. Some of the contents: "Failure of free colored people in attaining an equality with the whites", "Slavery in the light of social ethics", "The fugitive slave law", "State of public opinion in relation to colored population". The title page bears the signature of Chas. (Charles) Manly, 1795-1871, governor of North Carolina 1849-1851. Pre-Civil War, Manly wished to keep North Carolina in the Union but when the war started he supported the South. He owned a plantation outside Raleigh called Ingleside. In 1853 he owned as many as forty slaves. Third Edition. SCARCE.
