("All The Works Of Flavius Josephus, The Jewish Historian...Translated From The Greek And Hebrew With Explanatory Notes...) William Whiston translated Josephus in 1837, Hugh Jones translated it into Welsh in 1819

R. Jones, Gomerian Press: Dolgellan, Wales, 1819. Hardcover. Good. Item #22-0322

Eight plates (Cundee, London, 1812) including frontis, map of Canaan, 11 x 8.5", 1/4 leather, marbled boards, spine gilt ruled with leather spine label, (i)-xii, (705)-2000, front cover detached and rear cover almost detached, covers/spine very well worn, scuffed/scraped, peeling, chipping, lacks upper spine tip, endpapers torn, soiled and stained, ink name, foxing, soiling, creasing, offsetting, edge tear, 967-968 margin archivally repaired, 1069-1070 missing part of upper margin which affects text, one plate has a hole in the center, toning, six of the plates and the map (bound in at back) are heavily stained and torn. Binding tight. Ink name of "James Morris" with "No. 3" on front endpaper- is he the listed subscriber "Morris, Surgeon, Barmouth"? Is No. 3 the third book printed by Gomerian? Gomerian Press was a very eminent Welsh publisher belonging to the Jones family, so quite likely that the translator Hugh Jones is part of that family. The pagination for this book varies from other sources: NUC: xii, iv, 1200; British Museum: 782 + 113. Same for plates: NUC: port., plates (how many?) and no map and nothing listed for the British Museum. One copy currently for sale lists 1200 pages and no plates/map. The Library of Congress is the only institution to have a copy (see NUC above for description). Very SCARCE, no match anywhere. FIRST EDITION.
