COTTON STEALING, A Novel

John R. Walsh: Chicago, IL, 1866. Hardcover. Very Good. Item #21-9843

7.5 x 5", pebbled cloth, 487pp, covers heavily rubbed, extremities bumped and chipping, spine worn, old ink ownership inscription on front fly, textblock/inner hinges cracked, pp a bit toned and finger soiled/spotted, very light marginal staining to first 80pp or so, but still a decent, readable copy of this SCARCE Civil War fiction title attributed to J.E. Chamberlain. From the preface: "Every phase of the Cotton Trade, within the army lines during the war, was so conducted that it obtained the name of "Cotton Stealing"; and the parties engaged were called "Cotton Thieves"...although founded on fact, and built of materials furnished by actual experience of the cotton trade, the novel is a witness rather than a judge..." FIRST EDITION.
