Two original pen and ink sketches by Dan Beard: 1) "The Bully Oven For Boys Life" and 2) a bull moose in water.

"Bully Oven" oblong 5 x 14", stiff white card, soiling else good, shows a domed outdoor oven with these words on it: "Earth Leaves Hot Stone Hot Stone" and a turkey? and potatoes are cooking inside, also has Beard's preliminary pencil drawing of the oven on the reverse. An origninal sketch for Boys Life Magazine. The moose, 4.5 x 4.5", stiff white card, unevely trimmed, soiling, shows the back of a moose who is encircled by water. Daniel Carter Beard, 1850-1941, was an illustrator, author and outdoor enthusiast who helped to found the Boy Scouts of America in 1910, he was one of their first Scout commissioners, and was assistant editor of their magazine "Boys Life". He also helped his sister organize the Camp Fire Girls, and he illustrated several of Mark Twain's books. BOTH PIECES ARE SIGNED "DAN BEARD" AND HE HAS HIS PENCIL INITIALS ON THE MOOSE IMAGE.
