Carte-de-visite by Charles Paxson "Learning Is Wealth. Wilson, Charley, Rebecca & Rosa, Slaves From New Orleans" shows three light-skinned slave children studying from books and being taught by an older slave man

Chas. Paxson: NY, 1864. Paperback. Very Good. Item #21-8757

3.75 x almost 2.5". Unevenly trimmed, spotting/soiling, edgewear else good. Printed on the back, in part: "No. 6. The net proceeds of these Photographs will be devoted to the education of colored people in the department of the Gulf, now under the command of Maj. Gen. Banks." The carte-de-visites were issued to raise money for the education of freed slaves in New Orleans and that showing lighter skinned children would raise more money. Very SCARCE image.
