8.5 x 5.25", polished calf with red leather spine label, 283pp + 399pp + 8pp index, covers rubbed and spotted, extremities lightly chipping, outer hinges a bit rough, inner hinges cracked, missing prelims, eps darkened from glue underneath, title page browned around the edges, scattered spotting and finger soiling; still a good, complete copy. 50 men were arrested for conspiring to burn down the Michigan Central Depot in Detroit; Abel Fitch died before the verdict, but 12 defendants were sentenced to jail time. Note fro the publisher, in part: "In the eyar 1849 a series of assaults and depradations were committed on the property...of the Central Railroad Company...in Jackson County. This continuted until the autumn of 1850, when the freight depot of the Company in Detroit....was burned and totally destroyed". SCARCE.
