Fore-edge painting, frontis, 9.5 x 6", full dark red leather, highly gilt dec blindstamping, raised bands with gilt lettering. Floral pattern in the panels, inner dentelles gilt, aeg, marbled endpapers, 691pp. Shelfworn, replacement spine, leather has some scuffing/scraping, corners bumped and worn, page edges have light scratches, inner hinges archivally reinforced, front inner hinge cracking, scattered foxing to the first and last few pp, ink name else very good condition. Binding tight, gilt bright. The fore-edges reflect the late 18thc. based on the clothing. TWO SPLIT FORE-EDGE PAINTINGS: TWO COUPLES DANCING OUTSIDE A WATERFRONT PUB WHILE A BARGE HAULING A PRIVATE CARRIAGE AND ITS PASSENGERS APPROACH, A ONE-MASTED SAILING VESSEL WITH WINDOWS AND A FEW SMALL SAILBOATS ON THE THAMES/WOMAN HOLDING BABY AND MAN HOLDING THE HAND OF A SMALL CHILD ON A WALKWAY NEAR THE DOCK MEN IN FLAT BOTTOMED BOATS NEARBY AND BUILDINGS LINING THE THAMES. ST. PAUL'S IN THE BACKGROUND. Colorful, very detailed.
