Frontis portrait of Queen Victoria; illus. (including the Queen's dogs), 8.5 x 5.5", gilt-dec and gilt lettered beveled green cloth, 404pp, covers rubbed and worn in spots, spine ends bumped, inner hinges tearing, bookplate of former owner inside front cover, "Bound by Burn & Co" label inside rear cover, pp a bit toned with some scattered spotting primarily to edges of textblock, prelims and illustrations, frontis portrait of Victoria with small horizontal tear at gutter. VERY RARE FIRST EDITION (before the Smith Elder trade edition), INSCRIBED "To Sir Theodore Martin / With the expression of her sincere gratitude for his assistance in the completion of this work..." AND SIGNED "VICTORIA R" BY QUEEN VICTORIA, who adds the date "Dec. 27, 1883" (page is spotted). Martin, a Scottish writer, wrote LIFE OF THE PRINCE CONSORT which Victoria was very fond of. Copies of the Privately Printed edition are extremely rare, and ones signed by Victoria almost never surface; neither NUC or the BMC list copies! Also included are two loose 5.5 x 8" sheets of paper with engraved images from the book: Glassalt Shiel and the Princess Alice monument at Balmoral.
