7 x 5", gilt-dec brick red cloth, 92pp, covers rubbed and darkened at foredge, extremities bumped and chipping, still a decent copy of the FIRST EDITION, INSCRIBED "To F.J. Child / With the author's love / 15th Dec, 1876", with typed letter from a bookstore explaining to the former owner how the inscription could be dated a year before the publication date. Recipient was probably Francis James Child, first Professor of English Literature at Harvard, and editor of the popular Child's Ballads series.
