36 x 52", linen backed. Stained, soiled, edges fraying, chipping else good. In 1891, John Askew Smith and others arrived in Gaston County, North Carolina to establish an town east of Whetstone Mountain which would be called Bessemer City Mining & Manufacturing Company. He hired engineer W.R. Richardson to lay out the town. Smith and Associative petitioned to have it incorporated which happened in 1893. Shown on the map are parks: Cleveland, Skyland, Washington, Bessemer; streets: Pinchback, Mickley, Gould; a railroad "Piedmont Air Line" and of course Whetsonte Mountain. Bessemer City has several iron furnaces but its' business was mainly cotton. Very SCARCE.
