In 1891, John Askew Smith and others arrived in Gaston County, North Carolina to establish an town east of Whetstone Mountain which would be called Bessemer City Mining & Manufacturing Company. He hired engineer W.R. Richardson to lay out the town. Smith and Associative petitioned to have it incorporated which happened in 1893. Shown on the map are parks: Cleveland, Skyland, Washington, Bessemer; streets: Pinchback, Mickley, Gould; a railroad "Piedmont Air Line" and of course Whetsonte Mountain. Bessemer City has several iron furnaces but its' business was mainly cotton. Very SCARCE.
