Detroit, nd (1922?). Paperback. Good. Item #21-4996

Photographer not listed, photo studio numbers on lower right corner. Sixty linen-backed black and white/sepia photographs, oblong 9.5 x 7", leather, front cover is embossed with "Hat-In-Ring" design which was the symbol for the 94th Aero Squadron in which Rickenbacker served. Covers very well worn, creased, stained, rubbed, fraying, lower front cover missing a small piece, first and last two photos have heavy creasing and wear, pencil scribble, light creasing, staining (more obvious on the linen), last two pages chewed near inner margin, overall good. There are 24 photos of the machine shop, 23 photos of drawings of car parts, 8 photos of car illustrations and 5 photos of company officers, only 13 photos are labeled. In the wonderful machine shop photos men are working on engine blocks, rims, wheels, etc., assembling the cars, chassis and cars on assembly lines; some of the drawings of the car parts include wheels, crankshaft, differential, motors; the car illustrations show these autos: sedan, sports phaeton, sports roadster and coupe. The company officers who are not identified are Eddie Rickenbacker, Barney Everitt and E. LeRoy Pelletier, the two remaining might be Harry Cunningham and Walt Flanders. Supposedly this album belonged to the man resembling Walt Flanders per a relative of this man but the name was not supplied. The factory shown could be the former Disteel Wheel Plant on Michigan Ave. in which the business was started in 1921. In 1922, work began on their Albert Kahn designed factory at 4815 Cabot near Michigan Avenue. Also in 1922 E. LeRoy Pelletier joined Rickenbacker Motors as its advertising manager. Due to various reasons Rickenbacker left the company in 1926 which caused the management and investors also to leave and the business went into receivership by the end of the year and was eventually sold to Walter O. Briggs. Great photographs showing the various stages of assembling the automobiles of this short-lived company. Comes with three pieces of Rickenbacker Motor Company letterhead with "Hat In Ring", soiled, creased and torn. Great early automotive history. SCARCE.
