Real Panoramic Photo Postcard of the Great Lakes car ferry Pere Marquette 18

Badger, publisher. 1 cent stamp box. Oblong 3.5 x 11", postally unused. Lacks tip of right corner, corners creased, minor chipping, front has soiling and a small stain, reverse heavily soiled else good. The Pere Marquette 18 is at the Waukegan dock (matches other images at this dock), the upper deck is full of summertime travelers, portside bow has a sign "Waukegan And Return 35 cents". Minimal activity at the dock, a few horsedrawn carriages. This vessel was launched in 1902 and carried passengers and railroad cars between Ludington, Michigan and Kewaunee, Manitowoc, Midland, Wisconsin. During the summer months of 1907-1910 when freight traffic was low the vessel was chartered for excursions between Waukegan and Chicago. On September 9, 1910 while enroute from Ludington to Milwaukee the Pere Marquette started taking on water, it flooded so fast that pumps couldn't keep up and it sank. Aboard were 62 passengers and 29 railroad cars. Over 29 lives were lost including that of the captain, Peter Kilty. SCARCE image.
