No photographer listed. 3.5 x 2.5", printed under the image "Mrs. S.A. Douglas." Soiling, spotting, removal marks, written in pencil on reverse "Mrs. Stephen A. Douglas" else good. Adele Cutts was a popular and well educated belle of Washington society with impressive lineage. Her father was a nephew of former First Lady Dolley Madison and her mother a niece of Confederate spy Rose O'Neal Greenhow. She met and married Illinois Senator Stephen A. Douglas in 1856, at the age of twenty. They remained married until he died from a fever in June of 1861. She later remarried.
