Mounted photograph of "Argus The Magician" [Redpath Chautagua]

9.5 x 7.75", mount 10.5 x 8.5", no photographer listed. Photo heavily spotted, lacks tip of one corner, ink note, mount has notes, is spotted and creased, pinhole. Written on the front "Argus Called- In Sept-17-1939." On the reverse: "'Argus' The Magician. Per add. Kankakee Illinois Season 1922", "Bill-Board Cincinnati Ohio" and on two attached stickers "Argus The Magician" and "Son-In-Law Ed Reno" (one per sticker). A three quarter photograph shows Argus looking directly at the camera, he has greying hair and is wearing a dress coat with a white bow tie. Arthur Argus Herman 1879-1943, primarily traveled with the Redpath Chautauqua throughout the Midwest. An early poster describes his act as "one of the most bewildering of merit and artistic splendor. A delightful entertainment full of fun, with may wonderful effects in magic...Deceptio-Visus, mysterious coin, Great Chinese water trick, Mystic flight of Old Glory..." He died of a heart attack in 1943 in Indianapolis where he had lived for the past few years. SCARCE image.
