Carte de visite of Senator Edward Everett of Massachusetts

Warren's Portraits, 465 Washington St., Boston, nd (1870s?). Paperback. Very Good. Item #21-0097

4 x 2.5". Light soiling and rubbing, small area of light foxing, his name in pencil on reverse else very good condition. Everett represented Massachusetts in the U.S. House, was governor of the state, ambassador to England, President of Harvard, briefly Secretary of State under Millard Fillmore. He then became a U.S. Senator in 1853 but left the senate soon after being elected; his conciliatory stand on slavery made him very unpopular. Everett is probably most well-known for the speech he gave in 1863 just before President Lincoln gave the Gettysburg Address. Known as a flamboyant orator, his speech contained 13,000 words on fifty pages and lasted two hours. In contrast, Abraham Lincoln's speech had 271 words on one page and came in under two minutes.
