4 x 2.5". Light soiling and wear, scattered light spotting, his name in pencil on reverse else very good condition. Seated profile shot. William Alfred Buckingham was the 41st governor of Connecticut 1858-1866, U.S. Senate 1869 until his death in 1875. A close friend of Abraham Lincoln, he supported him in the war effort. Buckingham got together 54 companies of soldiers, read and answered letters from the troops. In 1862 Congress passed an act allowing the enlistment of black soldiers. In 1863 he persuaded the Connecticut General Assembly to authorize a regiment of black soldiers, the first group was the 29th Infantry.
