Photogravure is 6.5 x 8" on a lightweight backing paper that is 9.5 x 12.5". Backing has one lightly creased corner, one tiny edge tear and light toning on reverse else very good condition. Image shows Piegans with their horses on a bluff above Two Medicine River. The Piegan were part of the Blackfoot, an Algonkian people. Their territory once covered from the Missouri River in Montana to the North Saskatchewan River in Canada. With the backing of J.P. Morgan, Curtis was able to produce 20 volumes over the course of 24 years. There were more than 2,200 hand-printed photogravures, 272 complete multi-volume sets. The foreword was written by Theodore Roosevelt, a longtime supporter.
