Group of Eight Unlabeled Cabinet Card Photographs of the Monterey, California, area including two of the Hotel Del Monte. [Hermann Hall]

np nd (1890s?) Oblong 5.25 x 8.5, no photog listed, all mounts are dark brown except for two which are tan, gilt edges. Lightly curved, most have staining that affect the mounts and images, corners bumped and worn, creasing, edge wear, abrasions to mounts, overall good. Shown are: one of the wings of the Hotel Del Monte which was added after the April 1887 fire (matches other images, "Del Monte" in pencil on the back); a view of two of the hotel's windows as seen through a formal native garden, cypress trees near the ocean's edge, beachgoers/swimmers at an inlet where the beach is surrounded by a rock formation, a round, spotted fish poised against rocks, a family standing in front of their small frame house on a foggy day, a small settlement whose main road ends at the water and a very tall rock on the bank, a worn shanty with curved tile roof with a chicken near the door and mountains in the distance. Plus there are two photos of flooding in a rural area: sandbags on the ground on either side of the water with what is left of a footbridge, groups of men on both sides, remnants of pilings and the last photo shows three men standing on the bank of a rapidly flowing river (?) surrounded by sandbags; across the way are men sitting on a fallen tree limb and a house in the distance. The Hotel Del Monte is now Herrmann Hall, part of the Navel Postgraduate School, Navy Southwest Region. These photographs were acquired in the San Francisco area. A Total of eight cabinet cards, sold as is, as a lot only.
