JF Lewis and Co: Baltimore 1874 Illustr, 11 x 8, printed light orange paper over boards, brown cloth spine with gilt lettering, pict purple endpapers, 585 pp. Front cover detached, covers soiled, well worn, chipped and peeling, corners bumped and worn, spine tips torn and fraying, text block and rear inner hinge cracked (cover loose), a few loose signatures, small edge tears, some rough edges, light soiling else contents good/very good. Directory covers several states, each state has anywhere between one to a couple of dozen cities listed. These are the states with a sample city or two: Alabama: Mobile, Opelika; Delaware: Wilmington; Georgia: Atlanta, Savannah; Indiana: Cambridge, Richmond; Kentucky: Frankfort, Louisville; Maryland: Baltimore, Washington City; North Carolina: Asheville, Charlotte; Ohio: Columbus, Zanesville; Pennsylvania: Philadelphia; South Carolina: Charleston, Greenville; Tennessee: Memphis, Nashville; Virginia: Lynchburg, Wytheville and West Virginia: Parkersburg, Wheeling. Some of the types of businesses: Apothecary, artificial limbs, cotton gins, cigars, distillers, fertilizer and guano, fruit cakes, junk dealers, livery stables, pepper sauce, rice, salt, whiskey. Some ads have nice engravings and/or woodcuts, a sampling: "Atmore's Mince Meat," "Baltimore Steam Packet Co," "Delaware Car Works," "Charlottesville Woolen Mills," "HA Dreer Seedsman and Florist," "Great Southern Freight and Passenger Line," "Raleigh and Gaston Railroad Co," "Stephen F. Whitman & Son Finest Confectionery and Chocolate and Cocoa," "Wilmington Wagon Works," "Colonel Wood's Museum." And there's a nice, non-pictorial full page ad for "Fox's New American Variety Theatre" of Philadelphia who offers entertainment such as "Negro Delineations." This is a great resource if one is researching a certain type of business or a city (some that are mention might not exist today). A time capsule of what the United States was like in 1874-1875. Not in NUC or LC. Very scarce. FIRST EDITION.
