Stowe, Lyman E.

POETICAL DRIFTS OF THOUGHT, OR, PROBLEMS OF PROGRESS. . . Together with a Number of fine Poems on Popular Subjects Including Sketches of the City of the Straits -- Past, Present and Future.

Lyman E. Stowe: Detroit 1884 Illustr including images of Detroit and a panoramic foldout of Detroit's riverfront, 9.5 x 6.5, gilt and black ruled green cloth, gilt decoration and lettering, rear cover with decorative blind stamping, beveled edges, 319 pp. Covers worn and rubbed, corners and spine tips bumped, worn and frayed, inner hinges cracked, text block starting, toning, occasional soiling, offsetting, foldout of Detroit riverfront has creasing and a few tears else good. The foldout of Detroit is wonderful: It shows various vessels i.e. barges, tugboats, sailboats and the steamers Idlewild and the D&C's City of Detroit with buildings in the background. Lyman E. Stowe was a prominent 19th c. Detroit author, publisher, inventor, astrologer, lecturer on the occult and a Civil War veteran who was present at many major battles. There are numerous yellowing newspaper clippings from the 1940s and 1950s dealing with Stowe's two elderly daughters who had been beaten and robbed in the family home at 1325 Madison in downtown Detroit. The accounts of the contents of the home are fascinating. SIGNED AND INSCRIBED "MY FRIEND AND HEAVEN GIVEN DAUGHTER BY HUMAN KINDNESS MRS. AUGUSTA AMBUHL OF 1050 VAN DYKE AVE., DETROIT. THE AUTHOR LYMAN E. STOWE. . . MAY 25, 1917" FIRST ED.
