Taylor: London 1787 55 sepia-toned stipple engravings, 8.5 x 7, replacement blue cloth with maroon leather spine (no lettering), 53 separate entries, pagination varies, but complete within each section. Covers worn, rubbed, spotted, leather scuffed/scraped, inner hinges cracked, spotting, small tears, ink stain on a portrait and pages before and after, uneven edges else good, plates are dated 1786-1789, same as in the British Museum listing. At the back of the book is the "List of Subjects Already Engraved and Published in the Cabinet of Genius, with the Authors from Whom They are Selected." In other words, the author, the name of his work and which number he was published in. For example, in this volume there is Dr. Samuel Johnson with "Stella" which is an excerpt from "Winter's Walk" and it appeared in Number XVI. As of the date of this publication there had been 22 numbers issued. Also from the "List": "Gentlemen may bind any Number to make a volume, and in any order they please. Those who bind every Twelve Numbers, may have a title to each volume on sending for it." So, according to both NUC and British Museum, the first edition is 1787 but the contents/bindings for various first editions can vary.
