Handwritten legal document in which the Bank of the State of Alabama is suing Hugh M. Rodgers and Joseph G. Evetts, both of Lawrence County, Alabama, for damages and that the county sheriff has levied property including slaves and mules

Lawrence County, Alabama 1857 12.25 x 8", unlined paper folded in half, writing on two sides only. Fold creases, staining, couple of tiny tears else good to very good condition. "said suit, which was by Phillip D. Rooney (sp?) Sheriff of Lawrence County...levied upon certain negro slaves to wit, Owen, a mean about thirty-five years of age, Fanny a woman about thirty-five years of age, Booker about fifteen years of age, Emeline a girl about fourteen...Caroline a girl about 10...York, a boy about seven...Vanessa (sp?) a girl about seven...Gern (sp?) about five...one infant child and Jane about fifty...and ten mules". Appears to be also a conflict of ownership as a Robert H. Cleere who "claims a trial to the right of property". Signed by the sheriff and all the parties involved, plus other participants ie. William S. Cleere, Hugh S. Stephenson.
