Manuscript bill of sale for five named female slaves being sold by Conrad S. Knight of Maryland to A.W.G. Davis, a cousin to the future president of the Confederacy, Jefferson Davis

Maryland May 14, 1833 One sheet folded in half, 9.75 x 7.75", cream paper, written on one page only. Staining, small tear at top of fold, fold creases else very good condition. The slaves, aged nine to thirty-six years of age were named Mariah, Hester, Srah, Nicy and Naussy (sp?) were sold for $1,650.00. Alfred Ward Grayson Davis, 1806-1863, enrolled at West Point in 1824 and roomed with his cousin Jefferson Davis, he eventually left to study law. He was later appointed attorney general of the Arkansas Territory by Andrew Jackson, served on various militias and later in the Confederate Army's Quartermaster Department.
