One of the articles: Goodell's Anti-Slavery Lectures No. 1, sub-headings include "Facts of Slavery", "Its Cardinal Principle-Chattelship", "Annuls Marriage", in which "Slavery annuls marriage...slaves can make no contract-a slave cannot even contract matrimony...the restoration of lawful marriage to the colored race, and the protection of their females from irresponsible power, together with their moral and religious improvement..." Other articles: "Slave Breeders", "How It Strikes A Stranger" in which a European visitor was horrified that this country sold men, "Political Suggestions To The Colored Inhabitants of Boston", "Insurrection In Cuba". A mention of a visiting planter from St. Vincents who "says that the emancipation of the slaves in that Island works extremely well". Plus a want ad "In a family in Concord, Mass., an intelligent and trusty colored girl, 14 or 15 years old, to do house work." The masthead shows two images: a slave auction and emancipated slaves.
