Berger, 8.75 x 6", gilt-lettered purple cloth, 242pp, covers rubbed, extremities bumped and worn, spine sunned, hinges loose, stain on bottom edge of text block near spine, pp yellowed and worn, old newspaper clipping about author affixed to verso of front fly. FIRST EDITION ("I" on last page), INSCRIBED "To my dear friend Julia Cooley Altrocchi: who is my joy as a woman and my delight as an author" AND SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR dated February 1937; unfortunately, the old newspaper article on the opposite page has browned a stripe across the inscription/signature. Julia Cooley Altrocchi was a children's author, and Hildegarde Hawthorne was Nathaniel Hawthorne's granddaughter.
