The Century Co.: NY 1899 Illus. include maps and frontis photo portrait of author, 8 x 5.5", original gilt-pict blue cloth, 306pp. Covers well worn and darkened, extremities bumped and lightly fraying, spine quite dull and a little cocked, hinges loose, EX-LIBRARY with usual markings, pp edge-toned and used, but still a decent copy of the FIRST EDITION. PRESENTATION COPY, WITH AUTOGRAPH NOTE SIGNED BY AUTHOR (Chicago, Il., Feb. 15, 1903) PASTED ONTO FRONT FLY. ALSO TWO PAGE AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED ON "The West, Minneapolis, Minn" LETTERHEAD DISCUSSING THE BOOK AND MEETING RECIPIENT (pencil date at top "2/18/03") AFFIXED INSIDE FRONT COVER; letter is roughly torn at top, with folds, toning, tearing at one fold but still boldly done. Hobson was the commander of the Merrimac, and was charged to sink the steamer in the channel off Santiago, Cuba; he was captured by the Spanish and spent the rest of the war as a POW.
