Meyer, Annie Nathan.

BLACK SOULS, A Play in Six Scenes.

Reynolds Press: New Bedford, MA 1932 7.75 x 5.25, gilt lettered cloth, 99 pp, covers rubbed and soiled, extremities bumped and fraying, hinges loose, pp toned (esp endpapers, unevenly so), but still a decent copy of this scarce book. From the foreword by John Haynes Holmes: "In 'Black Souls' the author presents the problem of the American Negro emancipated into a society which will not receive him. . . " Under copyright notice: "Extremely liberal terms will be extended to colored groups who wish to perform the play." NUC lists only this edition. INSCRIBED "To Belle C. Tobias, a graduate of Barnard College of whom the College is justly proud. And may I add -- that as a Trustee of Barnard I am proud of the record you have made and I am also proud of your friendship" AND SIGNED BY THE PLAYWRIGHT, ANNIE NATHAN MAYER, who adds the date: "New York Nov. 1932." Meyer was one of the founders of Barnard College. Belle Channing Tobias (daughter of YMCA big-wig Channing Tobias) was an African-American educator. Great association!
