"Masked Batteries" a CDV of a young woman over which has been hand painted a hat and veil and a shawl.

John P. Soule: Boston 1865 4 x 2.5, light curving and soiling, small spots around/on image else good/very good. A young brown haired lady is wearing a yellow hat with grey feather with pink and red flowers at the front; she is holding her shawl/wrap against her, it cream with narrow dark pink stripes and orange dots; her opposite shoulder, barely visible, shows a garment that has three green stripes. John P. Soule, 1828-1904, studied photography with Jessie Wallace (J.W.) Black, worked for Albert Bierstadt and his brothers, later opening his own business, simply called J.W. Soule. At the end of the Civil War, he took photographs of the destruction and various forts. Perhaps "Masked Batteries" taken during this time period was a lighthearted play on words during this serious endeavor. Scarce.
