Real Photo Postcard of "The Famous Bottle Fence at Waters, Mich. Near Gaylord, Mich."

Waters nd (1914) No photographer listed. Oblong 3.5 x 5.5, postally unused, very light wear, light soiling on 1-cent stamp on reverse else very good. Waters, in Otsego Lake Township, Michigan, is famous for the "bottle fence" that was the brainchild of Henry Stephans Jr. (sometimes spelled Stephens). Stephans, heir to his father's lumber fortune, wanted the bottle fence to be a tribute to the hard living/hard drinking lumberjacks of early days. The area children were paid $1.00 for each bottle brought to Stephans whether it be canning jars or liquor bottles. When completed its length covered two city blocks, had an iron gat in the center and the words "Henry Stephens" (his father's preferred spelling). A few decades later the bottle fence is no more. Scarce.
